For nearly four centuries, Topkapi Palace was one of the principal centers of Ottoman government and court life.

When Was Topkapi Palace Built?
Sultan Mehmed II began building the palace after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople.
Construction developed between 1460 and 1478, with later sultans adding new buildings, pavilions and decorative elements.
Rather than being designed as one monumental building, Topkapi developed as a sequence of courtyards and increasingly private spaces.
Understanding the Palace
The palace is easiest to understand through its courtyards.
The outer areas were connected with administration and service functions, while deeper sections became progressively more restricted.
Important areas include the Imperial Council, palace kitchens, Audience Chamber, treasury collections, religious relics, gardens and imperial pavilions.
The Topkapi Palace Harem
The Harem was the private residential area of the Ottoman dynasty.
It contained apartments, courtyards, ceremonial spaces and rooms used by members of the imperial household.
Its architecture developed over several centuries and provides a more complex picture of Ottoman court life than the popular stories usually associated with the word “harem.”
How Much Time Do You Need?
Topkapi Palace is much larger than many visitors expect.
Allow at least several hours if you want to see the main courtyards and collections without rushing.
Visitors interested in the Harem, architecture and palace collections can easily spend much longer.
