Rising above the Golden Horn, Süleymaniye Mosque is one of the most important monuments on Istanbul’s historic skyline.
Commissioned by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent and designed by Mimar Sinan, the mosque represents the confidence and balance of classical Ottoman architecture.
When Was Süleymaniye Mosque Built?
Construction began in the 1550s and the mosque was completed in 1557.
Its position on Istanbul’s Third Hill gives the complex visibility from the Golden Horn, Bosphorus and many parts of the Historic Peninsula.
This relationship with the skyline was an important part of Ottoman imperial architecture.
More Than a Mosque
Süleymaniye was created as a külliye, a larger social and religious complex.
Buildings around the mosque historically served functions connected with education, healthcare, food distribution and charitable services.
The complex therefore helps explain how major Ottoman mosques contributed to everyday urban life rather than functioning only as prayer spaces.
Architecture by Mimar Sinan
Mimar Sinan was the leading architect of the classical Ottoman period.
At Süleymaniye, he created a monumental interior without making it feel excessively heavy or crowded.
The central dome, semi-domes, supporting structure, windows and restrained decoration combine to produce a bright and balanced space.
Tombs of Süleyman and Hürrem Sultan
The complex also contains the tombs of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent and his wife Hürrem Sultan.
Mimar Sinan’s own modest tomb can be found close to the mosque complex.
Visiting Süleymaniye
Süleymaniye remains an active mosque.
Dress respectfully, remove shoes before entering the prayer area and avoid visiting during congregational prayer if you are sightseeing.
One of the additional rewards of visiting is the surrounding viewpoint over the Golden Horn and Bosphorus.
The mosque can easily be combined with the Grand Bazaar, Spice Bazaar and Eminönü during a day exploring historic Istanbul.
